What is the NBC Olympics Fan Study?

The NBC Olympics Fan Study is a project, sponsored by NBC, designed to collect insights into how the biggest Olympic fans use multiple devices to keep up with the Olympics whether at home or on the go. NBC has joined with comScore, the company behind OpinionSquare to recruit Olympic enthusiasts for this study. Participants are asked to share their media viewing habits with us throughout the Olympics – the how, when, and where they watch the Olympics and interact with NBC Olympics content. NBC will use the information collected in this study to improve coverage of future Olympics.

Why do I need to keep a diary?

The diary is important to this project so that we can understand how you interact with Olympics content on multiple devices at one time. Are you tweeting while watching figure skating? Sharing the latest Olympics headlines on Facebook? The diary helps us understand how you use different technology to stay connected with the Olympics.

return to top

What kinds of questions are asked in the diary?

For each diary entry, you will only be asked to tell us where you were during the time period, what devices you were using, and what you were doing on the device. The questions are all multiple choice and can be answered very quickly. Click here to see a demo of the diary.

Do I need to fill out my diary if I watch something other than the Olympics?

Yes, you must fill out your diary for every half hour period between 7am and midnight each day regardless of what you are watching or doing.

return to top

How often do I need to fill out the diary?

To be eligible for the full incentive payment, you must fill-in diary entries for all 30 minute periods from 7am-midnight. We ask that you complete the diary as close to each 30 minute period as possible so that you won’t forget what you were doing. If you watch any Olympics content or interact with any Olympics content after midnight, we ask that you also record that in your diary. You will be able to complete diary entries for the day prior to the current day, but we ask that you try to complete your diary entries in a timely fashion so that your activities are still fresh in your mind.

return to top

Why does my diary say I’m missing activity?

The activity status section of the diary will indicate whether we saw activity from all of your registered devices on the previous day. Generally if your devices are registered and you used the device on the previous day, we would have recorded that activity and will reflect that in your status. If you did use a device on the previous day, and the status shows no activity registered, please click on the link for that device for more information. If your device is still registered and you continue to see a “no activity registered” message, please contact the NBC Olympics Fan Study Support Team.

return to top

I reregistered my device, why does it still say I’m inactive?

Your activity status is updated once each day reflecting the previous day’s activity. So if you reinstall the software on your computer on Monday, you will not see that updated in your diary until Tuesday. Rest assured we will give you credit for that days activity.

How do I change the frequency of the text message reminders?

Text message reminders are used to make sure you don’t miss any diary entries, so that you can be eligible to earn the full $150 available to you. If you complete all diary entries for the 90 minute period, you will not receive a text message for that period. Timely diary entries are very important to the project, so you will not be able to change the frequency of those reminders.

When will I receive my incentive payments?

When you participate in the NBC Olympics Fan Study, you are eligible to earn up to $150.* You will earn your first $25 after you complete the registration process, including downloading and launching the NBC Olympics Highlights and Results and NBC Sports Live extra apps. You must complete this before the Olympics begin on February 6th. A Fan Study Visa® Prepaid Card will be sent to your home address and should arrive within 10-15 days of completing the registration process. It’s a reloadable card so be sure to hold on to it! We’ll be adding more money to it during the Olympics if you complete the Study’s other requirements.

After your initial payment, you can earn $5 each day you keep your devices registered and complete your electronic Olympics diary. You’ll get a special bonus after day 9 of the Olympics and at the end of the Olympics if you meet all of the requirements each day.
